PPS 3
RESEARCH & INNOVATION IN RENEWABLE HYDROGEN PRODUCTION
A NEW CHALLENGE
Hydrogen Production
The main process for the production of hydrogen is the reforming of natural gas steam, a resource of fossil origin . The main technologies used in this project are already known, but the major challenges will lie in the use of renewable sources - instead of natural gas, - the improvement of the overall efficiency of the hydrogen production process and the overall cost reduction through the use of more efficient and cost-effective catalysts.

PPS3 GOALS
This PPS3 has the specific objective of producing hydrogen from a renewable source - biogas/biomethane or biomass gas - with the reduction of current technology costs, through incremental innovations.
H2: The Obtaining Process
-
Reform with biogas steam, biomethane and biomass gas.
-
After reforming, the gases produced are subjected to a WGS (water gas shift) reaction to enrich the gas mixture in hydrogen.
-
Efficient process of separating hydrogen from other gaseous constituents, mainly carbon dioxide.
STEPS TO BE ACCOMPLISHED
1. Laboratory Studies of Steam Reform with Water Gas Shift (WGS) with Development of New Catalysts
2. Separation of Hydrogen from the Remaining Gaseous Components, Mostly CO2 by PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption)
3. Construction and Testing of Prototype for Demonstration
4. Life Cycle Assessment as well as Technical-Economic Analysis of the Process at the Demonstration Scale.
